She was one of the best things in the Ceiliuradh programme.
Cathy Desmondhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06032146147358267682noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7491569710507705729.post-25817284482340155182021-02-01T16:44:07.167+00:002021-02-01T16:44:07.167+00:00Thank you Dara. I appreciate you taking the trouble to send me your feedback from the other side of the world.Cathy Desmondhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06032146147358267682noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7491569710507705729.post-68190501408225450162018-06-27T23:32:06.327+01:002018-06-27T23:32:06.327+01:00Hi Cathy, I came across your post as I was looking...Hi Cathy, I came across your post as I was looking for a bit of critical reaction to Ceiliuradh having only recently discovered it on YouTube. I've been living in Melbourne since 2010 so I feel somewhat out of touch with the ebb and flow of whatever is occupying public fascination at home.
I am, however, aware of vastly improved relations between England and Ireland, particularly at diplomatic levels. I have a recollection that this Albert Hall event was happening at the time of Michael D's state visit but I didn't check it out then. I did click on a few of the songs last night because some of the obvious choices are songs I like to sing to my 4-year old daughter and I was happy for her to see them to see if she got a kick out of hearing them out of the mouths of the professionals. But, as you have indicated, I found things a bit forced and underwhelming - and yes, indulgent in places.
I didn't see much evidence of the Irish in Britain, the children of the diaspora, or something that might have felt a bit more current, vital or bi-culturally evolved.
I did enjoy The Gloaming's opening set very much though.
Overall, it was clearly a very positive, warm, feelgood event and sure, why not? But something of a missed opportunity perhaps.

Anyway, I really liked reading your perspective and am impressed by your depth of knowledge of what Irish (and British) musicians of various stripes are up to.
Thanks, DaraDara Clearhttps://theclearout.com/noreply@blogger.com
